Synopsis

This chapter is told out of order with a flash forward into the future. While cleaning her stuff out of the storage room, Tomoko discovers cicada shells. She decides to throw them away, preferring to not keep a memory of herself and her brother catching cicadas as kids.

In the present, Tomoko’s mother calls her to help with winter cleaning chores. After doing one chore, Tomoko tells her mother to get Tomoki to do them instead. Her mother tells her that she should be more responsible as the older sister and that Tomoki is studying for an exam so she has to do them all. Infuriated, Tomoko storms into Tomoki’s room to yell at him for making her look like a fool. Their mother witnesses this and slaps Tomoko.

Tomoko is let off the hook from cleaning but is told to organize her stuff from the storage room. While throwing out her stuff, Tomoko finds a notebook from Tomoki’s younger school days. In it, Tomoki writes about how much he loves his older sister. Wordlessly Tomoko picks up the cicadas.

After finishing up, Tomoko goes outside to play in the snow. Outside, she looks toward her brother’s window and realizes how cold it is. She goes back to her brother’s room and tosses her big purple toy at him, saying that she’s lending it to him. Tomoki notices a cicada stuck to the back of the toy and expresses that it’s gross.
